Oedipus Rex (1967)
Oedipus Rex (Edipo re)
is a 1967 Italian film directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Pasolini adapted the
screenplay from the Greek tragedy Oedipus the King written by Sophocles
in 428 BC. The
film was mainly shot in Morocco.
Antigone (1961)
Antigone is a 1961 Greek film adaptation of
the Ancient Greek tragedy Antigone by Sophocles. It stars Irene Papas in
the title role and was directed by Yorgos Javellas.
The film follows the story
of the play closely, but ends differently–instead of Creon retiring back to the
palace as in the play, the film ends with Creon retiring his kingship and exiling
himself out of Thebes.
Medea (1969)
Medea is a film by Pier Paolo
Pasolini based on the ancient myth of Medea. Filmed in Göreme Open Air Museum's
early Christian churches, it stars opera singer Maria Callas in her only film
role. She
does not sing in the movie.
Electra (1962)
Electra (Greek: Ηλέκτρα Ilektra) is a
1962 Greek film based on the play, Electra, written by Euripides. It was
directed by Michael Cacoyannis, as the first installment of his "Greek
tragedy" trilogy, followed by The Trojan Women in 1971 and Iphigenia
in 1977. It starred Irene Papas in the lead role as Elektra, and Yannis Fertis
as Orestis.
